ESOC at the 2024 Home Internationals
ESOC members were involved in the Scotland teams for all of this year’s Home International competitions.
The Home Internationals are annual competitions between selected teams from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, with an individual event and a relay over a weekend, plus a social event on the Saturday evening. There are 3 different competitions: the Junior Home International (JHI) for M/W14-18, the Senior Home International (SHI) for M/W20-21, and the Veteran Home International (VHI) for M/W40-70.
The 2024 SHI took place on 7/8 September at the FVO Weekend, and ESOC’s Rachel Brown was in the Scotland team. The individual race was at Edinchip, and the relays were at Callander Crags. (See the event report on this website for more details about the weekend.) Scotland won by a convincing margin.
This news item on the Scottish Orienteering website gives an account of the competition, including some photos, and see also the SHI Report on the Forth Valley Orienteers website.

Individual
Relays
The VHI was on 5/6 October in Northern Ireland. The individual event was held in conjunction with the NI Orienteering Long Distance Championships at Gortin Glen, north of Omagh, a large mixed coniferous forest split with steep slopes and many drainage ditches. Longer courses also ventured onto rough moorland. The relays were at Seskinore Forest, south of Omagh, an old estate with mixed deciduous and coniferous forest and several large open areas. ESOC members Kevin Harding, Sally Lindsay, Janice Nisbet and Helena Nolan were in the Scotland team, and Janice is also the Veterans Team Manager.
England won the competition, and Scotland came 2nd.

Individual
Relays
The JHI was on 12/13 October at Sheringham Park in Norfolk. The terrain here is deciduous woodland with a network of paths and tracks, and lots of contours. Judy Bell is ScotJOS Team Manager. Scotland won the individual day by a narrow margin. After the relays, England and Scotland had the same number of points, and Scotland were declared the winners because they had more 1st places.
