Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club

FVO Weekend, 2024Edinchip / Callander Crags, 7/8 September

This double-header weekend was organised by Forth Valley Orienteers, and featured the fourth event in the 2024 Scottish Orienteering League on Saturday, and the sixth event in the South of Scotland Orienteering League on Sunday. The Senior Home International competition took place alongside these events.

SOL 4 was on Saturday 7 September at Edinchip Estate, just west of Lochearnhead, in the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. The terrain was described in the Final Details as “tough, technically challenging”. The map covers the valley of the Kendrum Burn, and the lower slopes of Auchtubhmore Hill to the SW. There were 2 starts, near Edinchip Farm in the NE of the area, and courses ran along the main valley below the A84 road. The terrain includes deciduous woodland with patches of conifers and some rhododendrons; lots of marshes; rough open pastureland with scattered trees; and open moorland used by the longest courses. There are intricate contours throughout, and many perched blocks and large boulders, plus lots of bracken on the hills. A disused railway line, with a deep cutting, runs through the area.

The weather was sunny, and very warm.

ESOC results in the top half of their courses:

  • Short Brown (23 competitors) – Ben Brown 8th
  • Blue (51) – Calum Robertson 9th, Keith Brown 21st
  • Short Blue (47) – Richard Oxlade 2nd, Megan Brown 4th, Finlay Ross 20th
  • Green (20) – Lucy Hamplova 7th

SoSOL 6 was on Sunday 8 September, at Callander Crags. This technical area is on the steep hillside above the town of Callander, and has varied terrain including coniferous plantation and deciduous woodland, with some steep gullies and complex contour detail in places. There are plenty of rock features, including some very large crags, and several patches of windblown trees and other dense vegetation.
