ESOC at the SOA Activity WeekendGlenmore Lodge, 27-29 September 2013
20 ESOC members attended the excellent SOA weekend for volunteers, and had a great time, while learning a lot.
The weekend took place at Glenmore Lodge in the Cairngorms, and offered a wide variety of sessions. Training in practical skills included the use of SI, Condes, GPS and OCAD, courses in coaching and controlling, and an organisers’ workshop. There were discussions about publicity and use of social media, WOC 2015 volunteering, and a discussion session for controllers and planners. Actual orienteering featured too, with groups going out to nearby areas during the day, night orienteering in Glenmore Forest on Friday and Saturday evenings, trail-O near the lodge, and a friendship relay on Sunday afternoon. As well as all this, there was the opportunity to enjoy walking or cycling in the forest. Although it was a packed schedule, there were enough gaps to allow us all to socialise, meeting new people, discussing ideas and sharing experiences. The food was plentiful and very good, and the accommodation was comfortable.
Many different people were involved in putting the weekend together – many thanks to them all for making it such a success.
