February Social 2025Greenbank, Wednesday 26 February
Celebrity M60s and W60s were being hunted on the streets of Edinburgh on Wednesday for the orienteering element of the February ESOC social!
This theme was in celebration of our own 60th birthday (yes the celebrations will last ALL year!), and ESOCers took part in a score event for 60 minutes, with 25 controls to find. At each control, they would find a celebrity name and the birthday that A-lister will celebrate in 2025. From visiting the controls and getting this information (or alternatively simply by guessing - and this was encouraged!), competitors had to guess all of the 25 celebrities’ orienteering age classes.
Did you know that, for example:
Kylie Minogue is a W55, Boris Johnson is an M60, John Travolta is an M70, Angela Rippon is a W80.
Now you do! As and when they join ESOC, you will be able to get confirmation of the above facts in the results from our Saturday events.
The winners on the night were:
- 1st - Rachel Rose (23 correct celebrity orienteering age categories out of 25)
- 2nd - Alexis Gow (22)
- 3rd - Alison Harding (22)
As a tie-breaker (between 2nd and 3rd place) we asked people to guess the 25 celebrities’ combined ages. Fortunately for Alexis, Alison’s maths wasn’t on top form on the evening!
Whilst the orienteers were racing around 12 Turfers were competing in their own competition too.The planner, ESOCWalter set zones covering Braidburn Valley Park, the Steils and Colinton Mains Park. Some zones intriguingly traveresed both an area in the parks and a road spanning the park boundary fence giving a great choice of take position.
Amongst the cyclists JammyDognut built up an early gap over ElsieSpanner which was maintained throughout. For the foot Turfers elpth got off to a strong start but was gradually being caught by Christmas2, however it was a case of too little too late as elpth took the spoils.

Special mention to the Braid Hills Hotel for how welcome they made us feel!
Thanks everyone for coming and a special thanks to Walter for planning the whole evening.
