Hair of the Dog Social - 2013Wednesday 2 January
Report from the ESOC New Year social.
I love it when a plan comes together, and with a little effort from a lot of people, a fun afternoon of food, socialising and games (at the Scout Hall by Spylaw Park in Colinton) followed on from an excellent morning of orienteering, which started from the polo field next to Covenanters’ Wood, near Dreghorn Barracks.
Specific huge thanks to the Dalgleish family for the brilliant concept, planning and organising of orienteering by train journeys; to the Brown family for organising and setting up the hall; to my 4 soup makers for their delicious soup (Fran, Dave, Maureen and Mehmet); to Gemma and Mehmet for their games and tremendous amounts of baking!!; to Bill and to Sally for their table quizzes; to Alastair and Katy for the newspaper and Pictionary games; to everyone who helped out in the kitchen and cleared up at the end and to everyone who came and brought along food and joined in the fun.
The event culminated in the traditional teddy bear races, and my thanks to Andrew, Craig and Jamie for organising these. Closely fought over several rounds (with very little cheating and no equipment failure), the final race was close, but the overall winner was Mehmet, who won the very desirable and beautifully created winner’s plate. To Kerry, the junior winner, went the even more sought-after silver, bendy monster of a trophy that we have traditionally come to love (and hope we don’t win!).
