The orienteering clubs in the East of Scotland region joined together for a successful coaching day on Sunday. TD1 and 2 were based in Meadowfield Park, while those TD3 and above were on Whinny Hill.

Club President Helena writes:

Sunday was the first of 4 East of Scotland coaching days this year. It included coaching for all abilities, both adults and juniors, with around 50 participants. It was great to see so many people having fun on what turned out to be a beautiful day.

Testimonies from participants and coaches are below:

Catriona: Training was fantastic! We were lucky with the weather, with the sun emerging just after we arrived on Whinny Hill. I had felt a bit apprehensive about joining the TD4/5 group, having only recently moved up to harder courses, but I needn’t have worried. The coaches were incredibly supportive and approachable and the exercises suitable for orienteers with varying levels of confidence. After some tricky contour-only exercises, it was a relief to switch to maps that also showed the gorse bushes! The final mixed adult/junior relay was a fun finish to an enjoyable day (though apologies to my team mates for getting lost…).

Robert: I really enjoyed the TD5 orienteering coaching at Whinny Hill - helped by great weather and a brilliant area. The session really demystified contours for me, and the surprise relay at the end was a lot of fun. As someone who learns mostly by doing (and with orienteering, by making plenty of my own mistakes) having focused coaching was genuinely useful. I’d definitely encourage people to sign up for the next one.

Lesley (KFO): It was great that there was something for all levels; my 6 yr old was able to be with the TD1 juniors, my teenager with the TD4+ juniors and myself with the TD4+ adults. The exercises were really valuable and well planned and the coaches engaged in helping everyone get what they needed out of them. The relay at the end bringing everyone together was a great idea.

Rachael: Brilliant and surprisingly warm (at times!) ESOA training today.

Nora: Thanks for a brilliant kids’ session!

David: Great fun with a nice bunch.

A huge thank you to everyone involved, especially the many coaches who gave up their time to provide an excellent day’s training:
