ESOC juniors enjoyed the Jamie Stevenson Trophy event.

Judy Bell reports:
"90 juniors from 10 different Scottish clubs, plus supporters and parents, gathered at Hill of Alyth for the Jamie Stevenson Trophy on Sunday 15 June. The Jamie Stevenson Trophy is the annual inter-club competition for junior orienteers in Scotland and is a fundraising event for the Scottish Junior Orienteering Squad (ScotJOS).

Much to the relief of the organiser, Sunday dawned bright and dry - after torrential rain on the Saturday. The juniors congregated at the assembly area in a clearing in the gorse on the SW side of Hill of Alyth. The day started with the customary parade of clubs - unfortunately only 4 ESOC juniors were present for the parade (others had got held up on the way) - but they still managed to make themselves heard!

The parade was followed by a mass warm up which was led by some of the ScotJOS juniors. The stretches had a farmyard theme with gates to open and close, chickens to feed - and giraffes!!! When the rest of the ESOC team arrived there was some serious face painting going on - with arms and necks painted as well as faces, and ESOC temporary tattoos to add to the mix.

The start was up the hill from the assembly. Alistair Duguid, the planner, had decided to be kind so that the worst of the climb was before the courses started. There were fantastic views of the arena and the surrounding area from the start. The area has a wealth of tricky contoured areas, and a labyrinth of thick gorse patches, giving a real navigation challenge in places. It was an area where “straight was never great” as there was often no way through the gorse! The courses finished with a fast downhill run in to cheers from the spectators in the assembly area.

ESOC had a fantastic scoring coming 4th out of 10 clubs despite a few of their team members having to pull out at the last minute. Congratulations to FVO who retained the Trophy, narrowly beating INVOC by just 4 points.
Huge thanks to Alistair Duguid for planning a great event and thanks to everyone for supporting."

ESOC’s counting scorers were:

  • Calum Robertson, Green Boys – 97 points
  • William Atkinson, Light Green Boys – 95 points
  • Emma Daley, Light Green Girls – 94 points
  • Lucy Sneddon, Light Green Girls – 93 points
  • Tate Woodhouse, Green Boys – 92 points
  • Rebecca Daley, Light Green Girls – 92 points
