JK 2026 - Day 1 - Sprint Perth City CentreFriday 3rd April
On the opening sprint day of the Jan Kjellstrom International festival of orienteering, ESOC had 7 competitors on the podium. The sprint was held in the centre of Perth and ESOC provided many marshals around the course.
Walter and Jo attempted the pre-o sprint in Scone Palace gardens. This was an accessible course where you had to look at the map and the control in the distance and work out if the kite was in the correct place. Harder than expected apparently!!
Kirstin Tinsley reports:
Friday the 3rd of April was the sprint day of JK2026. It was in Perth and it was also the day that ESOC had to help.
There were 18 different, challenging courses, with 1425 people attending from 19 countries including Italy, New Zealand, Cyprus and Japan. The arena was in and around Perth concert hall. It was very busy and there were three levels so it felt like people were slowly going higher so they could find some space!
My dad, Matt, had a marshalling spot in front of an alley making sure people didn't crash into each other. The marshalling spot was called Fish Mosaic and we thought of everything it might be apart from a literal fish mosaic, which is what it turned out to be. Strangely, most members of the public seemed pretty excited to be saved by inches from being knocked over by an 18-year-old going very fast.
My mum, Catriona's marshalling spot was a little less exciting. It was basically stopping orienteers getting run over. Which turns out to be more complicated than it sounds. All the ESOCians who came past looked very good.
Though everyone did very well we had seven ESOCians on the podium: Sally Lindsay, Ian Pyrah, Ingrid Edenbrandt, Heidi Ross, Anna Edenbrandt, Jo Stevenson and Helena Nolan. Some other people in the top five are: Hamish Mair, Crawford Lindsay and Hannah Durnall. Well done everyone!
