March Social 2025Corstorphine, Tuesday 25 March
On a calm dry evening club members enjoyed the choice of either an urban orienteering event or a Turf event. Both events started in the twilight at 7pm, just one week shy of the clocks changing otherwise it would have been fully in the light.
The orienteering format was a 60 minute score format with the twist of being a warm up for the race across Edinburgh event in June. Planner David G had 24 control sites spread over the area, each control having a country flag (some more well known than others) which competitors had to guess (with the continent the country belonged to being provided). There were 10 points per control and a 60 point additional bonus points for a completed continent.
Ewan K showed off both his running speed and knowledge of flags to come home first with 410 points, 2nd on 320 points was Alexis G and 3rd with 250 points was the joint team of Elizabeth & Bronwyn V on 250 points. Bronwyn was also 1st junior. Their prizes were some magnificently sized Easter Eggs.
The corresponding Turf event was planned by Artful and had 9 competitors trying to outdo each other by accumulating the most points and taking zones from each other. 62 zones were spread across the East Craigs area. 3 competitors were circulating by bike with the rest on foot. For the opening 15 minutes it was very tight across the leaderboard, with the exception of CSL who chose a far from optimal starting point. As time progressed the bikers took a stranglehold at the top of the leaderboard, one which was not going to be relinquished. JammyDognut took his 2nd victory in as many events followed home with a strong performance from Wintergreen. Leading Turfer on two legs was the very welcome Dangermous who had ventured over from Glasgow and leading junior was ESOCKisaKat. Turf event results can be seen here - FTT #14
After both events had concluded competitors gathered in the cosy Spice Lounge on DrumBrae South who made us feel very welcome. The food smelled amazing though your reporter unfortunately did not have sufficient time to sample it. Much chatter was had and a prizegiving took place for both events, along with several badges being awarded for 60 points in the anniversary incentive scheme.
Thank you to all that came and in particular to our two planners who provided an excellent evenings entertainment. Mark your diaries out for the evening of 29 April in Penicuik when we'll do it all again!
