Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club

Moray Mix (including SOL4), 11/12 June 2011

A large ESOC contingent competed at this excellent weekend, organised by Moravian Orienteers, with an urban race in Lossiemouth on Saturday and SOL4 at Culbin on Sunday.

The Lossiemouth Urban event on Saturday 11 June was part of the Nopesport Urban League, and all courses started in the Lossiemouth RAF base, with some tricky route choices amongst the buildings. The junior courses stayed within the base, and longer courses took in various parts of the town, with the longest crossing into the dunes and part of Lossie Forest too. All senior courses visited a housing estate that some remembered from the Scottish Sprint Championships in 2009 – but previous experience was no advantage, as the area is very complex with a maze of narrow alleyways.

ESOC results in the top half:
Men Open (26 competitors) – Ray Ward 4th, Alistair Hindle 9th, Andrew Lindsay 10th
Veteran Men (44) – Mark Wood 9th
Super Veteran Men (24) – Roger Scrutton 5th, Alastair Lessells 9th, Ian Pyrah 12th
Junior Men (11) – Craig Nolan 1st
Women Open (15) – Claire Ward 1st, Rona Lindsay 7th
Veteran Women (22) – Helena Nolan 3rd
Super Veteran Women (22) – Sally Lindsay 3rd, Janice Nisbet 5th, Margaret Dalgleish 7th, Eleanor Pyrah 9th
Yellow (16) – Kerry Wood 3rd

SOL4, the 4th event in this year’s Scottish Orienteering League, was on Sunday 12 June, in the eastern part of Culbin Forest, near Forres. It’s a beautiful area of sand dunes covered in open pine forest, with soft mossy ground, and very little undergrowth. Intricate contour detail called for careful navigation, though the forest was very runnable and courses were quite long. The weather turned out warm and sunny.

ESOC results in the top half:
Brown (28 competitors) – Claire Ward 3rd, Andrew Lindsay 8th
Short Brown (47) – Craig Nolan 7th
Blue (60) – Dave Kershaw 15th, Crawford Lindsay 26th, Rona Lindsay 27th
Short Blue (44) – Ian Pyrah 16th, Sally Lindsay 18th
Green (52) – Eilidh Nolan 9th
Short Green (37) – Margaret Dalgleish 6th, Jim Clark 9th, Eleanor Pyrah 13th, Norma Coutts 17th
Yellow (34) – Kerry Wood 12th
