Northern Championships weekend 2022Northumberland, 1-3 April

There was a small ESOC contingent at this weekend of events, with some great results.

The “Northumberland Spring” weekend started with a Sprint event on Friday evening at Cramlington, a few miles north of Newcastle, but there were no ESOC competitors.

On Saturday, there was a Middle Distance event at Shaftoe Crags, NW of Newcastle, organised by Northern Navigators. The terrain here is fast, runnable, open grassy moorland, with some rough pasture, pockets of deciduous woodland and lots of rock features. The area was split into two parts by a wall, and the southern part was more complex, with many large crags. The courses zig-zagged around the area.

ESOC results:
Blue (90 competitors) – Keith Brown 30th (2nd M60), David Robertson 81st (13th M60)
Green (117) – Hanne Robertson 105th (19th W50)
Short Green (69) – Janice Nisbet 26th (2nd W65), Maja Robertson 27th (16th W16), Judy Bell 37th (2nd W50), Brian Yates 63rd (4th M75)
Light Green (36) – Megan Brown 3rd (2nd W14), Calum Robertson 7th (4th M14)

On Sunday, the Northern Championships event was organised by Newcastle and Tyneside Orienteers, and was a little further south, at Dukeshouse Woods, on the SE side of Hexham. This was a late change of venue from Simonside (near Rothbury), due to land access problems. The terrain consisted of blocks of open runnable woods, with some denser slower woodland and an extensive path network. Features included clearings, rhododendron thickets, ponds, crags, pits and depressions. Unfortunately there were areas of unmapped windblown trees following Storm Arwen.

ESOC results:
M14A (23 competitors) – Calum Robertson 5th
M60L (17) – Keith Brown 5th, David Robertson 16th
M75L (5) – Brian Yates 4th
W14A (20) – Megan Brown 2nd
W50L (21) – Hanne Robertson 14th
W50S (10) – Judy Bell 1st
W65L (8) – Janice Nisbet 5th

Full results, including Routegadget, and further details are on the Northern Championships page of the NATO website.

The events on Saturday and Sunday were the twelfth and thirteenth in the 2022 UK Orienteering League. There are more details about the UKOL, including the updated league tables, on the UK Orienteering League page of the British Orienteering website. With the score for these events included, ESOC is lying 22nd in the club league. The latest score for each club is calculated automatically from the 15 best club members' scores (across various age class groups) - so the club members whose scores are included may change as the year goes on and more events are included.
