November Social 2025Tuesday 11th November, Stockbridge
As it poured with rain in the afternoon, I think most of us were reflecting on our decision to sign up for a night pounding the Stockbridge cobbles. However, Catherine's excellently planned, and as ever, unique and mind-bending social really turned out to be worth putting on a waterproof for.
Sarah reports....Each pair was given 2 separate maps. Each map was then sub-divided into 2 parts, a blank map and a "controls" map with a different set of 10 postboxes marked on. But...there was a twist! The controls map was a reflection (mirror image) of the real map.
Mine and Tom's strategy was to each copy our postboxes firstly onto the proper map, and then to copy each other's set of postboxes. This was a great strategy in theory however less good when I missed off copying 1 control immediately which Tom was then unaware of. And, as Peter found out, navigating off a reflective map seems easy in theory but pretty hard in practice!
Each pair was awarded 1 point for every postbox each person visited so you could choose to run together or seperately. Tom and I decided to run seperately, but happily I could latch onto Mark who showed me the way off, and then back onto, the map to the far postbox.
Returning to the pub, where Walter was busily buying drinks for everyone in his usual generous self, we learned we had come a worthy 3rd place to joint winners Alexis and David, and Vicente who had magnanimously run by himself as there were an odd number of us (he just got double points). Now to hide my chocolate prize from the kids!
Mark reports...The Turf event saw competitors eagerly eating up the zones set to a theme of Bonfire night and kindly set by turfer Christmas2 in her maiden event at planning (hopefully her first of many!). The streets of Stockbridge and Inverleith Park were wet and a touch slippy underfoot thanks to the Aufumn leaf fall, but seemingly unaffected was sjami44 who improved on his 3rd place two weeks earlier in Corstorphine to emerge victorious this time. Practice makes perfect!, however it was a close run thing as with just 10 minutes to go he was neck and neck with local expert ZulaTheAlien:) .

After the events finished all gathered in The Cumberland Bar for a catch up and prizegiving of chocolates of all shapes and sizes. Also included for the orienteering prize winners was a mirror to go with the theme of the event.
Thank you very much to our planners Catherine and Sarah for the super courses and formats.
