Katy and Alastair put on a great challenge - Sequence (sequins) O.
Following on from the "Only Connect" theme of the September social, Katy and Alastair came up with the idea of "Sequence O".
About 25 ESOCers turned out on a beautiful dry, moonlit night for this street O and social at Katy and Alastair's new home. The first puzzle was finding their home in the middle of the street maze that is Blackhall, and the O Sequence puzzle followed - 21 controls around the streets - find a grid number and name at each site - fit the names into the grid and work out the fourth in each of 7 sequences. Bonus marks for wearing sequins, but only Janet and myself took on this challenge - good reflective properties but not very breathable running attire!
The running was dry and lots of fun - especially in Ravelston Woods - and there seemed to be quite a variety of routes chosen. Not all control sites had to be visited, but the connections on the grid became more obvious when more words had been filled in. With everyone back and the answers handed in, it was time for refreshments and chat - joined by those that chose not to run.
The winners on the night were Crawford - who made the most correct connections; myself - for being one of three who visited all controls but the only one to wear sequins (I’m sure sequins would have suited the 2 Andrews who also visited all controls!); and Janet (who was very late back) - brain shaped sweets suggesting she should have engaged hers better??! -(sorry Janet!).
For those that couldn’t make it on the night, here are the 21 words that fitted into the grid - have fun working out the fourth word in the sequence and the connection between the words. The results on the night were very poor, with the winner not even gaining 50% - can you do better?
A | Solway | Clyde | FVO | ? | What is the connection? |
B | Kips | Scald Law | Carnethy | ? | connection? |
C | Perth | Livingston | Glasgow | ? | connection? |
D | Sweden | Switzerland | France | ? | connection? |
E | Beijing | London | Rio | ? | connection? |
F | S Uplands | Royal Deeside | Strathspey | ? | connection? |
G | Murrayfield | Balgreen | Saughton | ? | connection? |

Many thanks to Katy and Alastair for planning the O, laying on a super buffet and generally agreeing to host a bunch of orienteers in their new home!
