Sandy Robertson1931-2015
Sandy died peacefully in the early hours of the 31st July 2015 after a long illness; he was a founding member of ESOC.
It’s with sadness I report the death on 31st July of Sandy Robertson. Sandy was an athlete with Edinburgh Southern Harriers in the ’60s when introduced to orienteering. He founded ESOC in July 1965, which is why our Club name starts with Edinburgh Southern.
Sandy, Margaret, Grant and Marsela moved to Bridge of Allan in the ’70s and then to Troon where Sandy founded CUNOC.
Some in ESOC will recall Sandy’s interesting address at our 25th celebrations in 1990, where he talked about orienteering’s early period in Scotland and in ESOC.
Sandy ceased orienteering in the mid nineties, and in 1996 I was fortunate enough to receive his entire orienteering archive.
There is a brief intimation on the SOA website about Sandy: here.
After his orienteering career, Sandy further developed his athletics interest, which he never lost, by becoming an event official. There’s a very warm tribute to Sandy on the Scottish Athletics website.
I’ve written to Margaret and family on behalf of ESOC.
