Scottish Night Championships - Braid Hills, Edinburgh, 19 February 2011
This year’s Scottish Night Championships was organised by Interløpers, and many ESOC members took advantage of the opportunity to orienteer on the golf courses of the Braid Hills, an area that’s only available at night.
The Braid Hills golf courses have many small hills and gorse thickets, as well as some woodland, and there was fast running on the fairways, plus the added challenge of avoiding the greens and bunkers. The new map looked very unusual, with a lot of bright yellow and green. The vegetation was very accurately mapped, but there were plenty of mistakes and much discussion of these in the golf clubhouse afterwards, with general agreement that it was an excellent event. The weather was fine, and quite mild.
ESOC had 8 class winners (albeit some classes were very small indeed):
Rona Lindsay, W18
Helena Nolan, W45
Sally Lindsay, W55
Eleanor Pyrah, W65
Andrew Lindsay, M18
Roger Scrutton, M60
Ian Pyrah, M65
Barney Huthwaite, Novice
Other ESOC members who were in the top half of the results for their course were:
Course 1 (18 competitors) – Andrew Dalgleish 9th
Course 2 (34) – Walter Clark 13th, Gemma Richards 17th
Course 3 (22) – Crawford Lindsay 7th, Bill Stevenson 9th, Calvin Crane 10th
Course 4 (12) – Craig Nolan 2nd
Course 5 (13) – Bill Gauld 4th, Mehmet Karatay (injured) 7th
Full results are here, and further details are available on the Interløpers website.
