September Social 2013Monday 2 September

Report from the September social.

September’s social was organised by Anne and Bill Stevenson and featured a street score event, with a question to answer at each control site, which earned 10, 20 or 30 points for a correct answer. At the mass start, around 20 people set off in all directions and ranged through Orchard Brae, Comely Bank, Inverleith Park and as far as the Stockbridge Colonies, returning after 45 minutes or so, having thoroughly explored the area. Some questions were more time-consuming than others, so route choice could be tricky. There was a time penalty of 20 points per minute, though most returned within the time limit. The weather was dry and quite warm, and the wind had luckily died down since earlier in the day.
Over an excellent buffet, there was much catching up of news, as well as discussion about the best route, and the correct answers. Inevitably, there was a little ambiguity in a couple of the questions, and the planner kindly showed some flexibility in marking. 1st overall, and 1st woman, was Rona Lindsay; Mike Stewart and Crawford Lindsay were joint 1st men; 1st ultraveteran man was Alastair Lessells; 1st ultraveteran woman was Janet Clark.
Thanks to Bill and Anne for hosting the evening.
