SOL 1, 2022Gullane Dunes, 13 February
The first event of the 2022 Scottish Orienteering League was the second part of the “Dark ‘n’ Dunes” weekend and was organised by Interløpers. Plenty of ESOC members braved very wet conditions.
Gullane is a long, narrow area on the East Lothian coast, and the terrain includes open complex dunes, lots of tussocky grassland, mature pine woods and complicated paths through thick sea buckthorn scrub. Much of the area is fairly flat, though with short steep sections in the dunes. The start was NE of the Gullane Bents car park, and courses immediately headed into dense vegetation with a maze of paths. Most courses had double-sided maps. The longest courses also visited the rocky headlands W of the car park, where one part of the beach was out of bounds, because high tide occurred during the event, so it would be impassable some of the time.
Unfortunately it was very wet all day, which added to the challenge.
ESOC members in the top half of the results for their course were:
Brown (25 competitors) – Chloe Haines 7th, Rona Lindsay 8th, Katrina McLeod 11th, James Fathers 12th
Short Brown (29) – Sabine Oechsner 7th
Blue (53) – Richard Oxlade 18th, Helena Nolan 25th
Short Blue (40) – Finlay Ross 18th
Green (54) – Alison Cunningham 2nd, Maja Robertson 13th, Katherine Kirk 19th, Les Dalgleish 22nd
Short Green (32) – Margaret Dalgleish 3rd, Sally Lindsay 4th, Judy Bell 6th, Ian Pyrah 7th, Anne Hickling 14th
Light Green (20) - Calum Robertson 6th
