ESOC organised the third event in this year’s Scottish Orienteering League, in the familiar surroundings of the North Pentland Hills.

The event centre was in Dreghorn Barracks, with parking on the parade ground. There were two starts, and the route to them led round the barracks then through an underpass below the Edinburgh City Bypass. The Near Start, for the shorter courses, was a short distance to the south, while the Far Start was further west and higher up, and the finish was in the fields at the bottom of the hill. Courses made the most of the available terrain, and the longer courses had loops with some very long legs. The higher terrain was mostly open tussocky moorland, with some complex contour detail, crags and marshes. The shorter courses stayed on the lower ground, where there were many fences, plus areas of gorse and mixed woodland.

ESOC results in the top half of their courses:

  • Blue (39 competitors) – Calum Robertson 5th, Sarah Crawford 20th
  • Short Blue (45) – Richard Oxlade 4th, Finlay Ross 13th, Emma Anderson 19th, Mark Naylor 21st
  • Green (21) – Tate Woodhouse 5th, Peter Halling 9th
  • Short Green (21) – Mary Williams 3rd, Margaret Dalgleish 4th, Alistair Armitage 5th, Ian Pyrah 9th
  • Very Short Green (11) – Anne Stevenson 2nd, Eleanor Pyrah 3rd
  • Light Green (13) – Simon Firth 7th
  • Orange (14) – Emma Daley 6th
