SOL 6, 2022Creag Dhubh, 9 October

Yet more navigational challenges at the sixth event in the 2022 Scottish Orienteering League, organised by Badenoch & Strathspey Orienteering Club.

Creag Dhubh is above Newtonmore. It’s a very technical area on a steep hillside, mostly open birch woodland on the SE side of the hill, and there was a long walk up to the Start for most courses. (The Yellow and White courses stayed on the low ground.) The longest courses led beyond the woodland onto the open moorland even further up. There are many crags and other rock features, a LOT of bracken, and plenty of marshes but surprisingly few streams. Most found the area quite tough; there were some very long times and more retirals than usual.
The weather forecast was very poor, but although it was windy, the expected rain held off until the journey home.

ESOC results in the top half of their courses:
Brown (23 competitors) - Donald Slater 9th
Blue (40) - Richard Oxlade 17th, Keith Brown 24th
Green (37) - Les Dalgleish 9th=
Short Green (25) - Margaret Dalgleish 7th, Sally Lindsay 10th

This event was run in conjunction with the JHI Individual event. Full results, including Routegadget, and further details are available on the Creag Dhubh event item on the BASOC website.
