Tinto Twin 2024 / SoSOL 10Lanark Racecourse/Strathclyde Country Park, 23/24 Nov
STAG organised the 35th Tinto Twin events, on a weekend of extreme weather, and there were 3 ESOC trophy winners.
The Tinto Twin is an annual 2-day competition, with a night event on Saturday, followed by a day event on Sunday. It was run for many years by Tinto Orienteering Club. The day event was also the 10th in the 2024 South of Scotland Orienteering League.
The Night event was at Lanark Racecourse, which is now used for sports pitches, and the event centre was at Lanark Rugby Club. The weather earlier in the day had been very bad, with blizzards and road closures, but conditions improved later, and the event was able to go ahead. The terrain here is very mixed, including short grass on the rugby fields, dense plantation forest with many paths, rough open land, a loch, a few deep ditches, and a golf course. There was snow lying in the open areas, and it was very wet underfoot as the temperature rose dramatically and the snow was melting. Everyone enjoyed soup and rolls in the rugby clubhouse afterwards, while discussing their courses.
On Sunday, the Day event was held at Strathclyde Country Park, which is SE of Glasgow, beside the River Clyde and the M74 near Motherwell. The event centre was in the incongruous surroundings of M&D’s Theme Park, at the western end of the country park. The terrain is a mix of rough open land, mature woodland (with scratchy undergrowth), and open parkland, with a network of tracks and paths. The area is split by the steep-sided valley of the South Calder River, which flows into Strathclyde Loch. The weather was sunny and mild.
The day event was also the final event of the 2024 South of Scotland Orienteering League. Further details, including the league tables, are on the SoSOL page of the East of Scotland Orienteering Association website.
The ESOC winners in the overall Tinto Twin competition were:
Terry Johnstone (M55), Crawford Lindsay (M65), and Sally Lindsay (W65).
Other ESOC competitors who were in the top half of the results for their courses were:
Night - Lucie Hamplova 3rd on Blue
Day - Ronnie Nolan 9th and Helena Nolan 10th on Blue
