There were 5 ESOC winners in the overall results of the 36th Tinto Twin 2-day competition, another great autumn weekend organised by STAG.

The Tinto Twin is an annual competition, with a night event on Saturday followed by a day event on Sunday. It was run for many years by Tinto Orienteering Club. The day event was also the 6th in the 2025 South of Scotland Orienteering League.

Palacerigg Country Park is on the SE side of Cumbernauld. This area is on high ground and has varied terrain including conifer plantation, deciduous woodland, heather moorland, and open tussocky areas, as well as some old quarry workings in the western part of the map, and a golf course in the south. There’s an extensive network of paths and tracks. Both events were based at the longhouse, beside the park’s Visitor Centre and close to the car park.

The Night event start was close by, and courses stayed in the southern part of the park, on the golf course and surrounding land. The fairways were very wet underfoot, and there were some deep ditches, sometimes with handy bridges. Patches of woodland helped and confused in equal measure. After showers in the afternoon, the weather cleared and was fine during the event itself. Everyone enjoyed complimentary soup after their run, while comparing notes on route choice.

On Sunday, the Day event had two starts, and most courses had no overlap with the night before. The longer courses had a 25-minute walk to their start, in the NE part of the map, while the start for shorter courses was about 10 minutes to the west of the event centre. The shorter courses stayed in the western part of the map, exploring a steep-sided river valley and complex contours in the quarried areas. The longer courses led through newly-mapped woodland to the western part of the map, and the finish for all courses was close to the western start. The weather was windy and cool, but stayed dry, and the autumn colours were magnificent.

The day event was also the final event of the 2025 South of Scotland Orienteering League. Further details, including the league tables, are on the SoSOL page of the East of Scotland Orienteering Association website.
