WUOC 2022Switzerland, 17 – 21 August
ESOC’s Rachel Brown was in the GB team at the World Universities Orienteering Championships.
The World University Orienteering Championships normally take place every 2 years, but the 2020 event was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic. The 2022 event took place in the Swiss Mitteland, between the Jura and the Alps, north of Bern, with the event centre in Magglingen. Each nation could field four athletes in the individual disciplines, one Mixed Sprint Relay team, and two teams in the Forest Relay. Rachel Brown (Edinburgh University) was in the GB team, which had 6 men and 6 women competitors.
The programme of events was:
Wednesday 17 August – Sprint, Biel/Bienne
Thursday 18 August – Long, Gondiswil
Friday 19 August – Mixed Sprint Relay, Langenthal
Saturday 20 August – Middle, Corcelles
Sunday 21 August – Forest Relay, Gondiswil
Rachel ran in the Sprint, Middle and Forest Relay.
The Sprint event was in the old town of Biel/Bienne, which lies at the NE end of the Bielersee, at the foot of the Jura mountains. In the Women’s race, Rachel was the highest-placed GB competitor, in 18th place (out of 84).
The Middle event was in technical Jura mountain forest, between 650 and 850 m above sea level, on steep hillsides with some tracks. There were many rock features, in coniferous and deciduous forest with small areas of pasture. After another good run, Rachel was again the highest-placed GB Woman, in 22nd place (out of 85).
The Forest Relay was further south, between 600 and 750 m above sea level, in mostly coniferous forest on moderate to steep hillsides. Rachel’s team came 19th.
