Explanation of event types

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships. Virtual events are where there are no physical controls being used. Your presence at a control is registered using an App on your mobile phone, normally the free MapRun App.

Map / Terrain

Terrain:  Open hillside with plenty of contour details and some paths and tracks (this event uses only the open moorland of Cademuir Hill; not the Forestry section at all).  Where the map shows undergrowth, this may be high in places and competitors are advised to choose their route accordingly especially on the shorter courses.

Map: Based on 2007 version by Peel Surveys updated for 2026. Contour interval 5m.  Scale is likely to be 1:10,000  or 1:7500, and courses 1 and 2 will have a map flip. Maps will be printed at A3 (TBC) on waterproof paper and control descriptions will be printed on the front of all course maps.  Loose control descriptions will be available at the start.

Safety bearing is “Northeast / 45 degrees” and printed on the map will be an event phone number in case of emergency.

Safety Notes

General Safety (see also under Course safety below)

  • Other Users: This area is very well used by the general public, including dog walkers, runners and horse-riders. Please respect their right to be there at the same time as you are orienteering.
  •  Dogs: Please give any dog walkers you encounter whilst running on your course extra space ie don’t run too close, especially if their dog/dogs are off lead. Competitors dogs are not allowed on the courses
  • Weather: Please check the weather forecast on the day and dress appropriately as this event will be mostly on open hillside.  In the event of very bad weather, we may make cagoules compulsory. Notices will be posted where the route to the starts leave the car park. Please come prepared for this.
  • Whistles are advised and full leg cover is strongly recommended due to high heather and bracken on some route choices, and the presence of ticks which you need to check for after your run, as they can infect with Lyme Disease. If you have any doubt, you should seek medical advice.
  • Hygiene: There will be sheep on the hill during the event, all competitors should wash their hands thoroughly after the event and please do not be tempted to drink from streams.
  • Courses Close  at 14:30. You must report to Download even if you do not complete your course so we know you are safe.

Entry Details

Pre-entry via RaceSignUp (RSU) is required for this event and note the key dates below.

  • Entries open in RaceSignUp on Monday 24th August – enter by selecting a course by colour. Individual "preferred" start times can be pre-selected on entry but will not be displayed on the RSU page.
  • Closing date for online entries is Monday 7th September at 23:59.
  • Late entries by email to email hidden; JavaScript is required may be accepted, if maps are still available up to 23:59 on Wednesday 9th September to allow final start times to be allocated.
  • Number of maps available will be listed on RaceSignUp page in the Courses panel as Entry Limit-Number of entries and will be up-to-date up as of Tuesday 8th September at 10:00, but won't be updated as late entries are taken.
  • Final start times will be posted on the RaceSignUp page on Thursday 10th September. Note that some may have to be adjusted by a few minutes as necessary to fit the SOL rules on start times for members of the same club.

Start Times: are likely to be 11:00-13:00 and the closing time for courses will be 14:30 so if you think you might take a long time please choose an early start time.

NOTE: New to RaceSignUp? You will need to create an account before making any entries. You won’t need to pay for entries until everyone in your group/family has been entered. Profiles for individuals can be saved to your account.

Entry Fees

Fees for individuals are in the table below but we will also accept entries from pairs (sharing a map and dibber) on the easier technical courses only (courses 9-13) and they will not be eligible for SOL league points.

To enter as a pair, provide the details of one person as normal, then in the appropriate Pairs comment box add the name of the second person and, at the bottom of the entry form, select whether the additional person is an adult or junior. For a pair of juniors ensure the lead person on the entry form is a Junior (as opposed to the person making the entry). If a map and dibber is required for each person, then instead please enter as two individuals and select similar start times

Juniors: Parents are reminded they should declare if they are actually helping a Junior competitor as opposed to following. Assisted juniors are competitive in their colour course (e.g. White) but not in age class(e.g. W10B)

If you are the ‘shadower’ then you must have completed your own race before undertaking any shadowing.
