Explanation of event types
Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships. Virtual events are where there are no physical controls being used. Your presence at a control is registered using an App on your mobile phone, normally the free MapRun App.
Terrain type: Parkland & Woodland

Planners' Comments
Cammo was great fun to plan on and I hope you enjoyed running my courses as much as I did planning them. It is a compact area that has a surprising mixture of terrain . I made an early decision not to use the Southern hill with the tower on as I felt there was too much dead running and instead concentrated on making the most from the Northern part of the map. This divides nicely into 4 quadrants and I tried to run every course through every quadrant once with the longer courses having loops around each. Another early decision regarded the paths. Many of them move from year to year and looking back through past revisions of the map certain paths have appeared and disappeared multiple times. I only updated the map with those changes that affected the White and Yellow courses and left the other courses to fend for themselves. My biggest concern in the build up to the event was what state the work in the walled garden would be at, and a report on Friday that they had restarted work was a late worry. Fortunately it had minimal impact on any of the courses.
The "corridor" course was meant to be a quick way to make the Light Green course trickier and encourage runners to go straighter and navigate in the open areas using the individual trees rather than going around the paths. In the end "corridor" course was the most time consuming to produce with many iterations of the snipping and pasting and re-checking that all the legs were included on one side or the other. Thank you to all those that gave it a go - it made the effort worth while.

Organisers' Comments
What a fabulous day, over 250 people (adults, juniors and a few dogs) came to Cammo to go Orienteering and all seemed to have had a great time. A great way to start ESOC's 60th Anniversary year.
Thanks to Edinburgh City Council (Forestry and Natural Heritage) for permission to use the area and to the Friends of Cammo for the use of the Lodge for power and toilets and for keeping the estate is such good condition.
Join us for our next event on Corstorphine Hill on 16th Feb for a slightly tougher test.

Safety Notes
General Safety
- Other Users: Cammo Estate is very well used by the general public, including dog walkers, runners and bikers. Please respect their right to be there at the same time as you are orienteering.
- Dogs: Competitor’s dogs are allowed and should be kept under very close control at all times.
- SAFETY NOTE RE DOGS: Please give any dog walkers you encounter whilst running on your course extra space ie don’t run too close, especially if their dog/dogs are off lead. This applies to all competitors, not just those running with a dog. We always need to respect other people's right to be there.
- Water safety: Do not allow dogs or children to enter either of the big bodies of water ie the canal (water quality unknown) and the large wetland pond which is currently covered by dangerous pond weed.
- Weather: Please check the weather forecast on the day and dress appropriately. This event is on the edge of the city, but the weather is unpredictable in January and could be very cold, windy and wet. We recommend full leg cover for all competitors.
- Ice and mud: Although the long range forecast means there should be no ice, it will be muddy and slippery especially on the wetland boardwalk.
- Course Closure Time: All courses have a closure time of 3pm after which controls will start to be brought in (before it gets dark. All competitors should be back at Download by 3pm.
- Download: You must report to Download even if you do not complete your course, so we know you are back safely, and we don’t have to mount a search for you.
Please read and respect the British Orienteering Participant Code of Conduct.
Course Information
As for all ESOC local events, there will be ....
- White, Yellow and Orange courses for beginners and junior improvers.
- Long Orange for beginner adults, older juniors and Light Green for adult improvers.
- and a Corridor course for more experienced orienteers. This is a good training exercise for experienced orienteers. It is a normal course, but with much of the map blanked out! On Corridor legs only a narrow strip of map is shown on either side of a route between the controls. You need to keep in contact with the map and within the corridor. To make the course even trickier, the map is double sided with individual legs randomly placed on one or other side of the page.
These are provisional course lengths.
Course | Length | Climb |
Corridor | 3.9km | 45m |
Light Green | 3.9km | 45m |
Long Orange | 3.6km | 45m |
Orange | 2.5km | 45m |
Yellow | 1.7km | 30m |
