Explanation of event types

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships. Virtual events are where there are no physical controls being used. Your presence at a control is registered using an App on your mobile phone, normally the free MapRun App.

Officials' Reports

Planners' comments

This event has been rather a long time in the making and I hope everyone enjoyed it. Easter Craiglockhart Hill is a lovely place, especially when the sun is shining. The courses did all have to have quite a bit of climb and were dictated by the shape of the area. Winning times were about what I was aiming for, except that orange was perhaps over-physical and an alternative to control 230 should perhaps have been found. There is a limit to how technical the courses can be here so the maximum difficulty offered was light green and some of the control sites were picked more for the quality of their views rather than anything else! Long orange is a less common colour and I interpreted it as orange difficulty but a bit longer and more physical.

Organisers' comments

Easter Craiglockhart Hill was looking lovely in its autumn colours for our first event here for several years, and it was delightful to be warm instead of freezing in the Assembly area.

We welcomed many First-timers, many old hands, many family groups and all ages between six and eighty!  The ESOC volunteer team excelled themselves in flexibility, multi-tasking, thinking on their feet and going the extra mile.

The Junior O-zone was buzzing with the Cones Game, a deceptively simple exercise in keeping the map correctly orientated.

Let's have lots more events like this, please!

  • Thumb compass
  • Small black mesh Anker bag

A number of people noticed that their time on the last leg came up as being negative. This was because the time in the finish unit was set incorrectly.  Not a big problem, as it was the same for everybody, however this has now been adjusted in the final results. Your total time will now be more accurate and will be about 50 seconds longer than the printout you got when you downloaded.

Overview

Return on a new map to this once favourite area following the redevelopment of the Craighouse Estate.

There should be an OZone area at Registration (weather permitting) for any young orienteers to meet and play some O-themed games and puzzles and hopefully improve their orienteering skills

Map / Terrain

Easter Craiglockhart Hill has been unavailable for orienteering for several years during the redevelopment of the Craighouse Estate.  This is now complete, but imposes restrictions on some parts of the area previously used.  However, there remains a good path network, the lovely open top of Easter Craiglockhart Hill itself (one of the Seven Hills of Edinburgh), and plenty of surrounding woodland. We are delighted to be coming back here again.

Map based on the 1999 basemap by Peel Land Surveys and has been updated for 2025. Scale 1:4000, contour interval 5m.

Maps will be printed at A4 on waterproof paper with control descriptions on the front (no loose descriptions)
