Explanation of event types

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships. Virtual events are where there are no physical controls being used. Your presence at a control is registered using an App on your mobile phone, normally the free MapRun App.

Directions / Parking

Parking is at the east end of Straiton View at Straiton Business Park. There will be a lot of vacant bays out of hours. Please park thoughtfully. Straiton View runs behind Sainsbury's Superstore at the Straiton Retail Centre. Registration, the start and finish will be very close by. Although Straiton View itself is double yellow lined the signage for no parking is informal. There is parking in the retail park too.

Public Transport Options

This is on the south side of Edinburgh and easily accessible by bus or bike. Please try to walk, bike or use public transport if you possibly can. You can catch the following buses to Straiton Mains, Straiton Road/Sainsburys or Straiton Cottages - 37, 47,  X37, X47.

Map / Terrain

Mainly urban street terrain around the Straiton Retail Park (and some patches of moorland/forest) with many road crossings so all Under 16s must be accompanied.

Maps will be printed on non-waterproof paper at 1;4000

The map is a Sprint style map of the area using ISSprOM 2019-2.

Please read this document which describes the various symbols in use to describe roads, bridges, and tunnels and in particular the symbols indicating out of bounds areas (olive green), impassable features which must not be crossed and artificial barriers.

The symbols can also be seen used at this year's JK Sprint: https://www.jk.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#94&course=1.

Safety Notes

  • Please take care when crossing roads and obey the normal traffic conventions..
  • There will be other people in the area and there are some narrow paths so please be careful watching out for people running in the opposite direction to you.
  • Please avoid running close to local residents homes.
  • You must report to Download even if you do not complete your course, so we know you are back safely, and we don’t have to mount a search for you. Courses close at 8:30pm please report back before then.
  • The area may be busy with the general public, including dog walkers, runners and bikers. Please respect their right to be there at the same time as you are orienteering.
  • Please give any dog walkers you encounter extra space ie don’t run too close, especially if their dog/dogs are off lead

Course Information

There will be 2 courses:

  • Long - approx 5.0km straight line distance
  • Short - approx 3.0km straight line distance

Because of the road crossings ALL under 16s must be accompanied at all times by an adult when running. Due to the informality of the event the adult can also be competitive.

Courses close at 8:30pm please report back before then.

Course comments - There may be artificial barriers marked clearly on the map but not on the ground.

Although most of the mapped area has a 20 speed limit mph limit and many roads are cul-de-sacs, where driving speed is likely to be low, the main road B702 from Straiton may have to be crossed and the speed limit is 30 mph so care should be taken in crossing and runners encouraged to use crossings or street furniture to aid them.
