Explanation of event types

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships. Virtual events are where there are no physical controls being used. Your presence at a control is registered using an App on your mobile phone, normally the free MapRun App.

Overview

Sprintelope Extra! - An additional 6 date mini-series of events. These are similar to and follow up on the low-key Wednesday evening Sprintelope urban event series. This is however not part of the same Sprintelope league (for which the final event is Dunfermline on 14 August). The events are using Sprint-style maps, as used for the WOC Extra! social evenings.

Please NOTE: These events will use MapRun for timing (giving you split times for each control) and with physical maps issued to runners. In contrast to the main Sprintelope series, we will not be using SI Timing and so no dibbers are needed. Please bring a watch or similar for self timing (if not using MapRun) so you can declare your FINISH time at Registration when you report back. It’s all on trust and it’s all just for fun!

Visit the Sprintelope Facebook page for more information. Unless otherwise specified all Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.

Aways read the Planners' notes (under Map and/or Courses).

Map / Terrain

Mainly urban street terrain with many road crossings so all Under 16s must be accompanied.

Sprint style map at 1:4000. Please refresh your understanding of the Sprint mapping symbol set - Sprint (ISSprOM 20-19-2) - here and in particular the symbols indicating out of bounds areas (olive green), impassable features which must not be crossed and artificial barriers.

Those new to Urban orienteering can see examples of sprint maps (showing artificial barriers as thick purple lines) that were used in February this year for EUOCs Big Weekend, at South Queensferry (event called Saturday WRE) and Bughtlin (event called Sunday Sprint/Urban), on Routegadget here

The map will be printed on waterproof paper while stocks last, later entrants will be issued a map on non-waterproof paper.

Safety Notes

  • Please take extra care when crossing roads, some will be busy.
  • There will be other people in the area and there are some narrow paths so please be careful watching out for people running in the opposite direction to you.
  • Please avoid running close to local residents homes.
  • You must report to Registration even if you do not complete your course, so we know you are back safely, and we don’t have to mount a search for you.
  • The area may be busy with the general public, including dog walkers, runners and bikers. Please respect their right to be there at the same time as you are orienteering.
  • Please give any dog walkers you encounter extra space ie don’t run too close, especially if their dog/dogs are off lead

  • There will be 2 courses - Long course (about 5km) and one short course (about 3km) – a shortcut from the long course.
