British Sprint Championships 2022Leeds, 11/12 June

A few ESOC competitors made the journey to Yorkshire for a weekend of exciting Sprint orienteering.

The Mixed Sprint Relay took place on Saturday 11 June at the Headingley campus of Leeds Beckett University. The campus has a mixture of large, grand Victorian buildings, newer buildings and halls of residence set in parklands, with a few grass banks and steps. All courses started within the running track area then led out into the campus, returning for a spectator control before a short final loop on most courses. There was a high density of controls, which led to quite a few mispunches.

ESOC just had one team, in the Elite class, where there are 4 in a team (Helen Bridle, Paul Clatworthy, Keith Brown, Alison O'Neil) and unfortunately they mispunched.
Rachel Brown ran 4th leg for the EUOC Ledgends (sic), who came 2nd.
In other classes, there are 3 legs per team. Roger Scrutton ran 3rd leg in the “AROS Antiques” team, with Robin & Sheila Strain, and they came 7th out of 16 teams.

The Individual event was on Sunday 12 June, at the University of Leeds campus, close to Leeds city centre. There were qualifying heats and finals. In the qualifiers, the longer courses started in the parkland of Woodhouse Moor, to the NW. The campus itself has complex buildings in varied styles, on surprisingly hilly ground, with multiple levels reached by steps and ramps, and confusing underpasses. There were grassed areas, trees, hedges, and flowerbeds, though mostly the courses were on hard surfaces. The qualifiers and finals were in different parts of the campus, though the final control and run-in was the same for both.

The total entries in the classes with ESOC competitors were as follows: M60 - 41; M75 - 27; WOpen - 42; W20 - 6; W65 - 20. Most classes had several parallel heats, and the number qualifying for the A final depended on the entry in the class.
Rachel Brown (running as EUOC) is the W20 British Sprint Champion – congratulations!

Other ESOC results:
M60A – Keith Brown 6th
M75A – Roger Scrutton 15th
M75B – Brian Yates 8th
W OpenA – Helen Bridle 11th
W65A – Janice Nisbet 4th

This event was the 18th in the 2022 UK Orienteering League. There are more details about the UKOL, including the league tables, on the UK Orienteering League page of the British Orienteering website. ESOC is now lying 31st in the club league. The score for each club is calculated automatically from the 15 best club members' scores (across various age class groups) - so the club members whose scores are included may change as the year goes on and more events are included.
