ELO Festive Frolic 2016Vogrie Country Park, 31 December

There were plenty of ESOC members, and several prize-winners, at East Lothian Orienteers' Christmas score event.

East Lothian Orienteers organise an annual fun event just after Christmas. The Festive Frolic always has an interesting twist, so that simply visiting the controls isn’t the only way to gain points and win prizes.

The 2016 event was at Vogrie Country Park, SE of Edinburgh, near Gorebridge. It has varied terrain, with the steep-sided wooded valley of the Tyne Water, as well as open fields and parkland. The weather was fine, though windy.
The event was a 60-minute score, with a mass start. 30 controls were spread across the area, all with 10 points. As usual there were penalty points for anyone late back. This year’s twist was a festive item at each control. Competitors had to remember the items (no pens allowed), and which control they were at, then write them all down at the finish, gaining an additional 10 points for each correct answer.

Everyone enjoyed the café while discussing route choice and waiting for the results.

The maximum score available was 600, and the 4 people who achieved this were all from ESOC. Andrew Lindsay was fastest, followed by Rona Lindsay, Walter Clark and Rachel Brown.
Other ESOC members in the top half of the results were as follows (there were 100 competitors): Elspeth Bleakley 9th; Ben Brown 10th=; Martin Caldwell, Hanne Robertson and Judy Bell 13th=; Anne Stevenson 16th=; Mark Wood 21st; Maja Robertson 22nd; Chris McLeod 28th=; Andy McLeod and Kerry Wood 31st=; Alastair Lessells 35th; Margaret Dalgleish 36th=; Timothy May 38th; Fiona Findlay 39th=; Robert Findlay and Calum Robertson 41st=.

Full results are available in the Festive Frolic item on the ELO website.
