Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club

ESOC at the 2013 VHINorfolk, 5/6 October

ESOC orienteers were in the Scotland team at the Veteran Home International.

The Veterans Home International was held in Sheringham, on the north coast of Norfolk. Scotland were sadly unable to send a full team, and ended up in third place, behind England and Wales, who had full teams. The courses were reportedly excellent and the weather fine, adding up to a good atmosphere for the event.

The Relay was on Saturday 5 October at Kelling Heath Holiday Park, a wooded area with some steep and complex north-facing valleys. There are 2 classes in the relays – 2 Women plus 1 Man, and 2 Men plus 1 Woman. In the former, Heather Thomson was 5th on her leg for the Scotland 1 team, who finished in 10th place. In the latter, Helena Nolan came 9th on her leg for the Scotland 1 team, who finished in 6th place; Janice Nisbet came 6th on her leg for the Scotland 3 team, who finished in 7th place.

The Individual event was run in conjunction with the Norfolk Dumpling event at Sheringham Park & Weybourne Forest. This is a surprisingly challenging area with both deciduous and coniferous woodland, lots of rhododendron and holly thickets, some bracken and steep slopes. Heather came 4th in W35, Helena came 4th in W45, and Janice came 5th in W60.

Results from the event are on the VHI 2013 results page of the Norfolk Orienteering Club website.

Better luck next year! The 2014 VHI is in the Forest of Dean, in mid-September.
