ESOC at the 2015 Venla/JukolaPaimio, Finland, 13/14 June
3 ESOC members competed at the Venla and Jukola relays - the biggest orienteering relays in the world, held annually in Finland.
The Venla is a women’s race, for teams of 4 during the Saturday afternoon, followed by the Jukola, for teams of 7, overnight. This year there were over 1400 teams in the Venla and over 1700 in the Jukola. Paimio is near Turku, in the south of Finland.
At the Venla, Rona Lindsay ran 2nd leg for the EUOC 1st team, whose start position was 440. Katie Reynolds ran 1st leg, handing over to Rona in 232nd place. Rona gained another 80 places, then Sarah Jones and Zoe Harding ran 3rd and 4th legs, bringing the team in at 166th in a total time of 3:48:11, the first GB team to finish.
At the Jukola, Andrew Lindsay ran 3rd leg and Craig Nolan ran 6th leg for the EUOC 1st team, whose start position was 1203! Mark Purkis was on 1st leg, and handed over to Rob Kelly in 315th place. Rob handed over to Andrew in 280th place, then Andrew handed over to Will Rigg in 256th place, Will handed over to Charlotte Watson in 209th place, Craig held this position, and Calum McLeod ran the 7th leg to finish in 208th place, with the team total time 11:14:20, the highest-placed GB team.
