ESOC at the 2017 OMMLangdale, 28/29 October

Several ESOC members completed the 50th Original Mountain Marathon, no mean feat, in very challenging weather.

The OMM started in 1968, so this was the 50th staging of the event, with over 2000 competitors. It takes place over two days, and every team of two must be totally self-sufficient throughout the event, carrying all their equipment, with no outside support.
This year’s event was held in the Lake District, starting in Great Langdale. The terrain was hilly, mostly open fells. On Saturday, the weather was atrocious, with low cloud, rain and high winds; many teams retired. The overnight camp was at the top of the Duddon Valley, near Cockley Beck. Sunday’s weather was a complete contrast, with clear skies and panoramic views.

Congratulations to the ESOC participants:

  • Heather Thomson & Mike Stewart – 50th out of 217 finishing teams in the Medium Score class (4th Mixed Vet team)
  • Fran Daley & partner – 105th out of 138 finishing teams in the Short Score class.

(If I’ve missed anyone, please let me know.)
