ESOC at the Lakes 5 event 201022 - 27 August
Around 20 ESOC members went to the Lakes 5 this week, and enjoyed a varied selection of areas, though Day 3 had to be cancelled. In the final results, ESOC had 5 top ten places.
The Lakes 5 is a holiday week of orienteering in the English Lake District, organised by the North West Orienteering Association clubs, with five regional events and one rest day. The event centre was at Coniston.
Day 1 – Sunday 22 August – was at Swindale North, a fast and intricate open fell at the north end of Haweswater.
Day 2 – Monday 23 August – was at Tarn Hows South, near Coniston, with mixed complex woodland.
Day 3 was unfortunately cancelled due to problems with the parking field following heavy rain.
Day 4 – Thursday 26 August – was at Caw, a complex open fell SW of Coniston.
Day 5 – Friday 27 August – was at Helsington Barrows, a fast open limestone area near Kendal.
Points have now been calculated for all 4 days. Final scores were the total of each competitor’s 3 best scores, and many people lost a few places as others had the opportunity to drop a poor result. Sadly Claire Ward (W21L) was beaten in the end by a few points, but still had a fantastic result. ESOC competitors with 3 scores are as follows:
M12A (17 competitors) – Toby Huthwaite 14th
M14A (42) – Barney Huthwaite 22nd
M35L (20) – Ray Ward 5th
M40S (34) – Chris Huthwaite 6th
M55L (80) – Andy McLeod 9th
M60L (117) – Alastair Lessells 44th, Roger Scrutton 45th, Robert Findlay 89th
W21L (42) – Claire Ward 2nd, Sarah O’Neil 15th
W50L (52) – Chris McLeod 14th
W55L (53) – Mary Williams 10th
W60L (56) – Fiona Findlay 15th, Katy Lessells 42nd
