Grampian Mountain Challenge 2021Lochnagar, 6/7 November

A few ESOC members braved the elements to run the GMC, with great results.

The Grampian Mountain Challenge is a two-day winter Mountain Marathon, organised by Grampian Orienteers and usually held every 2 years. This year’s event took place in the Lochnagar area, starting near Balmoral. Both days included some controls on orienteering maps at the usual large scale, plus Mountain Marathon navigation on Ordnance Survey maps at 1:50,000. There was an overnight camp by Loch Muick, and overnight bags were transported there by the organisers.

Reportedly it was really wet and cold and windy on Saturday but well organised, and there was a heated tent at the overnight camp, full of food, beer and lots of friendly orienteers. Saturday’s courses were a bit long, and the courses were shortened on Sunday because of the strong winds, but the weather was clear.

Very well done to the ESOC competitors:
B course (25 competitors/pairs) – Donald Slater 3rd (1st on Day 2), Alistair Black 6th
Commiserations to Damon Davies, who also ran the B course, but sadly went to the wrong 1st control on Day 2.
C course (27 competitors/pairs) – James Fathers 2nd
