INTrepid weekendLivingston, 8/9 March 2014
ESOC turned out in force at Interløpers’ double header weekend, for the 3rd Scottish Orienteering Urban League event of 2014, followed by this season’s 6th South of Scotland Orienteering League event.
SOUL 3 on Saturday 8 March was a 2-race sprint among the complicated housing developments of Howden, with assembly near the Livingston Civic Centre. The first race started uphill from there, on a newly-mapped area featuring a typically technical Livingston housing estate, with several controls in woodland and a downhill finish (unfortunately into the wind) on an open grassy area.
The second race was longer, and used the same area as the JK 2012 Sprint, with the start adjacent to the car park. After a couple of controls in parkland, courses headed into a maze of housing and then crossed the river to a hummocky area with some confusing vegetation and a very confusing skate park.
The times for both races were combined in the overall results.
It was very windy, but dry, though very wet underfoot in the parkland.
ESOC results in the top half were:
Veteran Men 40+ (23) – Mark Wood 5th, Chris Lewis 8th
Supervet Men 55+ (21) – Martin Caldwell 6th
Supervet Women 55+ (14) – Janice Nisbet 3rd, Sally Lindsay 5th, Margaret Dalgleish 7th
Ultravet Men 65+ (11) – Roger Scrutton 3rd
Ultravet Women 65+ (7) – Fiona Findlay 3rd, Katy Lessells 4th
Junior Women 16- (2) – Kerry Wood 1st
Young Junior Women 12- (3) – Rachel Brown 1st

This event was also the first in the 2014 UK Urban League. Further details are on the UK Urban League website.
SoSOL6 on Sunday 9 March was slightly further north, at Dechmont Law. This is a relatively small area, and so the longer courses had a 2-part map. The terrain is varied, including open tussocky areas, shorter grass, steep wee hills, coniferous plantation with many fallen trees and logs, and some pleasant deciduous woodland, all with a network of tracks. The weather was dull and drizzly, and everywhere was very wet and muddy.
ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
Brown (33 competitors) – Craig Nolan 5th, Chris Lewis 13th, Mark Wood 15th
Blue (50) – Keith Brown 17th, Crawford Lindsay 20th
Green (56) – Alastair Lessells 14th, Finlay Ross 18th, Maggie Scrugham 20th, Janice Nisbet 23rd, Rachel Fawthrop 25th, Judy Bell 26th, Bill Stevenson 27th
Short Green (16) – Fiona Findlay 2nd, Jim Clark 4th, Janet Clark 6th, Anne Stevenson 8th
Light Green (15) – Kerry Wood 3rd, Ben Brown 4th
Orange (14) – Rachel Brown 2nd
White (5) – Megan Brown 3rd
