Kippendavie SoSOL
The second of ten events in the South of Scotland Orienteering League was held on Sunday 8th February on the Kippendavie Estate near Dunblane.
It was a grey, misty, drizzly day for the second South of Scotland Orienteering League event. These are next level events up from the local ones, with a choice of courses from White to Brown. There are no restrictions on which course you can enter.
The area at Kippendavie, on the outskirts of Dunblane, had 3 separate areas - intricate vegetation, runnable conifer forest with paths and dense green surrounded by ditches and rough open. After last winter’s storms, there were also many windblown conifer trees, which were thankfully mapped.
Registration and download were in the grounds of a local primary school, with the organisers STUOC providing home baking.
There was a long uphill walk to the start, but all on good paths and tracks. Of course this meant the walk back to assembly was all downhill. The shorter courses had options to cut through the forest or vegetation or head to a path and take a longer, but smoother route. On the longer courses, ditches and streams were often the way to go, although many had vegetation to slow you down. For those running later, the weather mostly stayed dry, although underfoot, and the trees, were very wet.
