Lakeland April Weekend 2016Lake District, 2/3 April
A handful of ESOC members enjoyed a double-header weekend in the southern Lake District, on great terrain in somewhat mixed weather.
On Saturday 2 April, there was a Middle Distance event at Tarn Hows, halfway between Coniston and Hawkshead. This is hilly terrain, with lots of rock and contour detail and few paths. The woodland is mainly deciduous, with some coniferous plantations and open grazed grassy areas. It was a very wet day, so it was extremely muddy, but the courses were enjoyable nonetheless.
ESOC results were:
Black (60 competitors) – Andrew Lindsay 8th
Brown (94) – Claire Ward 8th, Terry Johnstone unfortunately missed out a control
Blue (100) – Fran Daley 39th=, Crawford Lindsay 46th
Green Women (78) – Sally Lindsay 34th
White (16) – Laurence Ward 7th, Lucy Ward 8th
Sunday’s event was Long Distance, on Holme Fell, slightly further west. This is a fantastic area, with varied technical terrain including open fell, deciduous woodland and quarried areas. There are many crags, small hills, marshes, some very deep quarries, and spoil heaps, with complex contours throughout. The weather was much better than the previous day - pleasant spring sunshine, though it was very wet underfoot.
ESOC results were:
Black (33 competitors) – Andrew Lindsay retired after twisting his knee
Short Brown 2 (56) – Terry Johnstone 49th
Blue 2 (71) – Crawford Lindsay 30th
Short Blue 2 (82) – Claire Ward 1st
Green (93) – Sally Lindsay 33rd
