A few ESOC members competed in a double-header weekend in the southern Lake District, with good results in rough, tough areas, despite very wet weather.

On Saturday, there was a Middle Distance event at Simpson Ground, near Newby Bridge. This area is a Forestry Commission plantation, with intricate contour detail and many fallen trees impeding progress. It was raining most of the time, so it was very wet underfoot.

ESOC results in the top half for their course were:
Black (38 competitors) – Andrew Lindsay 18th
Brown (90) – Claire Ward 13th, Bex Harding 25th, Ray Ward 44th
Blue (75) – Crawford Lindsay 28th
Green (116) – Rona Lindsay 1st, Maggie Scrugham 40th (Note: Rona was recovering from injury, and ran down on both days as advised by the physio.)
Short Green (66) – Sally Lindsay 7th

Sunday’s event was at Bethecar Moor, further west. The terrain for the longer courses was technical open fell, mostly rough grass moorland, with many small hills, crags, and marshes, and very few line features. The weather was very windy and wet, adding to the challenge, and it was extremely wet underfoot.
Some courses were split, to limit the numbers on any one course, as this is an important area for nature conservation. White and Yellow courses were in the more sheltered forest.

ESOC results in the top half for their course were:
Black (33 competitors) – Andrew Lindsay 12th
Short Brown 2 (49) – Claire Ward 6th, Ray Ward 22nd
Blue 2 (52) – Crawford Lindsay 20th
Green Women (55) – Rona Lindsay 1st, Maggie Scrugham 22nd, Sally Lindsay 24th
Very Short Green (11) – Brian Yates 3rd
White (8) – Laurence Ward 2nd
