Middle Distance event and SOL1 - 2012Oban, 17/18 March

ESOC regulars ventured to the west coast, some making a weekend of it to compete at both of these events in the Oban area, with some excellent results.

On Saturday 17 March, CLYDE organised a middle distance race at Coille Nathais, just west of Taynuilt, at the south end of Loch Etive. It’s a lovely area of deciduous woodland (birch and oak), with some open moorland and grassy fields, and lots of contour detail throughout. The weather was cool but mostly fine, with a couple of heavy showers, and underfoot conditions were wet.

ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
Black (30 competitors) – Claire Ward 6th, Andrew Dalgleish 7th
Green (35) – Alastair Lessells 4th, Bill Stevenson 6th, Anne Stevenson 16th

Full results and further details including Routegadget are available on the CLYDE website.

The next day, the first event of the new Scottish Orienteering League season was organised by ECKO at Torinturk, in Glen Lonan, east of Oban. This event was in the western part of the area that was used for Day 4 of the Scottish 6 Days in 2011. The terrain is mostly open hillside, with rough grass, marshes and areas of dead bracken, and some mixed woodland, as well as faster running on close-cropped grass near the finish. There was intricate boulder and crag detail, and again plenty of contours. The weather continued cool and was quite sunny.

ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
Blue (51 competitors) – Claire Ward 1st, Ray Ward 7th, Roger Garnett 23rd
Short Blue (29) – Alastair Lesssells 15th
Green (41) – Janice Nisbet 4th, Ian Pyrah 7th
Short Green (21) – Margaret Dalgleish 2nd, Jim Clark 6th, Eleanor Pyrah 7th, Janet Clark 10th

Full results and further details including Routegadget are available on the ECKO website.
