Moray MTBO weekend 20226 - 8 May

Some enthusiastic ESOC Mountain Bike Orienteers travelled north for a full weekend of events in beautiful forest and good weather.

On Friday 6 May, the British Champs Weekend Warm-Up Sprint Event took place at Nethy Bridge, in beautiful Scots pine woodlands including part of the Abernethy National Nature Reserve and the Speyside Way. The start was south of the river, and the longer courses had short sections through the village, crossing the river to community woodlands with an intricate path network with roots, rocks and heather.

On Saturday 7 May, the British Middle MTBO Championships race was held at Quarry Wood, just west of Elgin. This event was part of the World Masters Series 2022.
The terrain is mixed forest with many well-defined tracks and a number of quarries. The east side is mature oak forest on a gentle well drained slope, in the west there is large hill with mature pine plantation forest, and the south side of this hill is steep with numerous single track MTB trails.

On Sunday 8 May, it was the British Long Distance MTBO Championships, at Altyre Estate/Sanquhar Woods. This was also part of the World Masters Series 2022.
Altyre Estate has a variety of mixed woodland and open fields with an intricate network of paths and tracks, including some challenging single track over undulating moraine, with some steep hills. Other challenges included fords and gates. Sanquhar Woods has a mix of housing estate roads and woodland with an intricate path network, in a moraine area surrounded by marsh.
