Northern Championships weekend 2019Sheffield, 9/10 March
There was a small ESOC contingent at this weekend of events (organised by South Yorkshire Orienteers), with mixed fortunes and some great results.
On Saturday, there was an Urban event (plus a UK Elite Orienteering League Sprint race) in Ponderosa, NW of Sheffield city centre. Ponderosa itself is an area of parkland, and the terrain also included old and new residential estates with intricate alleys, blocks of flats, university buildings, and other inner city parkland. It’s a hilly area, and additional challenge came from the weather, which was very wet.
ESOC results:
M75 - Ian Pyrah 3rd, Brian Yates 8th
This event was the second in the 2019 UK Urban League. League tables and other details about this league are available on the UK Urban League website.
On Sunday, the Northern Championships event was held in the northern part of Wharncliffe Woods (scene of the British Long Championships in 2011), to the north of Sheffield. The terrain was quite rough, a mixture of runnable woodland, thicker plantation, and open moorland, with some areas of complex former mining works, and a good variety of rock detail. It was muddy. The weather was very mixed – snow, rain, hail, wind and sun.
ESOC results:
M75L – Brian Yates 14th
W16A – Rachel Brown 2nd
W50S – Judy Bell 2nd
W75L – Eleanor Pyrah 1st

These events were the third and fourth in the 2019 UK Orienteering League. More details about this league are on the UK Orienteering League page of the British Orienteering website. ESOC is now lying 5th in the club league. The score for each club is calculated automatically from the 15 best club members' scores (across various age class groups) - so the club members whose scores are included may change with each event.
