Scottish Championships 2014Dalnamein / Newtyle Hill, 24/25 May
There was a great turnout of ESOC members for the Scottish Championships weekend; most managed at least one run, but some were too busy helping on both days. There were some great results.
The Individual event was on Saturday 24 May, at Dalnamein, near Bruar. The terrain is a mix of open heather and grass moor to the west, complex open heather moor to the east, and a block of mixed woodland bisected by the Allt Anndeir in the middle. All courses visited the forested area, with the longer ones visiting the open in either the east or the west; both for the very longest courses. The area is surprisingly runnable and wasn’t too wet underfoot. There were two starts, either side of the burn, with those starting in the east having a ‘spectator’ run-through partway round their courses. The weather was fine and sunny, but not too hot, and there was a pleasant grassy assembly area.
ESOC Trophy winners were Rona Lindsay (W20E), Claire Ward (W21E), Mary Williams (W60), Eleanor Pyrah (W70) and Jim Clark (M75) - congratulations!
Other ESOC members in the top half of the results for their class were:
M20E (8 competitors) – Andrew Lindsay 4th
M50S (10) – Keith Brown 4th
M55L (23) – Mike Stewart 11th
M60L (21) – Roger Garnett 10th
M65L (22) – Alastair Lessells 7th
M65S (2) – Robert Findlay 1st

W45L (24) – Helena Nolan 8th
W45S (9) – Judy Bell 5th
W50L (16) – Alison Cunningham 5th
W55L (19) – Maggie Scrugham 4th
W60L (16) – Mary Williams 2nd, Margaret Dalgleish 6th
W65L (17) – Anne Stevenson 6th, Fiona Findlay 7th
W70L (8) – Janet Clark 2nd
The Relays were on Sunday 25 May, at Newtyle Hill, near Dunkeld. The terrain was a mix of steep open hillside and woodland, and it was rough underfoot. The assembly area was at the lowest part of the area, but courses were level to start with and had a nice run down for the last few controls. There was a reasonable view of incoming runners, so changeover was not too fraught. The weather was mixed with some showers, but mainly fine for the running.
