Scottish Championships 2021Craig a Barns, 13 June
ESOC organised the 2021 Scottish Orienteering Championships Individual event, the first National event in Scotland this year, and a very welcome return to orienteering for many.
This event had been a long time in the planning during the Covid-19 pandemic, with a lot of hard work from the organisers in the face of continually changing restrictions and uncertainty about what lay ahead. There was no Relay event this year – this was the Individual event only. There was a big turnout from ESOC, with many members helping as well as competing.
Craig a Barns is on the north side of the Tay valley near Dunkeld. The parking field and starts were at the north end of the area, avoiding the very steep slopes on the south side of the hill. The starts were a short walk uphill from the parking field, with lovely views to the north. Craig a Barns is a technical area of complex terrain, mostly coniferous forest, plus some open heathery moorland and grassy slopes towards the finish. There were two out of bounds forestry re-stock areas – courses looped around these, with good variety of terrain and vegetation. It was often rough underfoot, though dry, and there were many crags and intricate contours to negotiate.
The weather was warm, with sunny intervals and a cooling breeze.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there was no prizegiving on the day. Trophies will be presented on a future occasion. Congratulations to ESOC’s class winners: Craig Leyland (M21L) and Rachel Brown (W18).
Other ESOC members in the top half of the results for their class were:
M20S (1 competitor ) – Ben Brown 1st
