Scottish Inter-Club Team Relay 2013Ganavan, 14 September
ESOC had two 8-person teams this year. Neither did particularly well, but it was a sociable event and it's good to see it back in the calendar.
We arrived on a beautiful early autumn day at the Ganavan Beach car park, just north of Oban, where Day 1 of Oban 2011 took place. Unusually, the ESOC club tent was the first one up. Gradually everyone arrived, bibs were distributed, and there were no last-minute substitutions. The relays began with a Tartan leg (short green), and both our intrepid runners had trouble with the 1st control. The terrain was mostly very rough - wet tussocks - which impeded progress. The event was organised by the Scottish Elite Development Squad (SEDS), so the courses were challenging and well-planned. There were good views of the competition area from assembly, and longer courses passed nearby about halfway round - there was great excitement as orienteers came into view. There were good views in the other direction as well, to Mull and the hills of Morvern.
Eventually our leg 2 runners set off (with ESOC Team One in last place at this point), and things began to improve. ESOC Team One finished in 5th place, and ESOC Team Two unfortunately mispunched.
Prizes were awarded to the fastest man, woman and junior on each course. Claire Ward won the prize for fastest woman on Tartan. ESOC Team One won a prize as the most balanced team, i.e. the one with least waiting time at handover to the final Tartan leg. The 11-person relay was won by Forth Valley Orienteers, and the 8-person relay was won by Interløpers.
