ESOC wins Scottish Inter Club Team Relay 2014!
This year the Scottish Inter Club Team Relay was held at the Falkirk Wheel, in conjunction with the Junior Inter Area Relay. ESOC entered 3 teams this year: Express, Experts and Explorers. I put together a “best” team and then two others that I hoped would be evenly matched. Saturday was a lovely late summer day of hazy sunshine and little wind. The assembly area was just east of the Falkirk Wheel, on an open grassy plateau. The orienteering was not technically hard, but the vegetation was a little trying and increased the times taken. The relay started at 14:00, with 14 teams taking part. Ray Ward, in ESOC Express, came back 1 second after the Interløpers first leg runner, and ESOC Express led for the rest of the race. The second leg runners Mike Stewart, Helen Bridle and Andrew Lindsay handed over to Craig Nolan, Andrew Dalgleish and Rona Lindsay respectively for the third leg, and we impatiently waited for our slowest third leg runner to return, so that Claire Ward could begin the glory leg. The team finished 10 minutes ahead of Forth Valley, with Interløpers close behind them in third place. In the battle between the other two ESOC teams, the Experts took an early lead over the Explorers, but fell at the final hurdle as their last leg runner didn’t complete the course.

Thanks to everyone for coming – hope you enjoyed it. I’d like especially to thank Claire Sloan, who ran for the Explorers at very short notice, as the original member of the team had urgent family business.
