Scottish Middle Distance Championships 2023Beecraigs, 18 March

This year’s Scottish Middle Distance Championships was organised by Forth Valley Orienteers and saw a good turnout from ESOC, with some good results but no champions this time.

Beecraigs is a country park west of Edinburgh, to the south of Linlithgow. The Assembly area was near the pond at Balvormie, and there were two Starts, a short walk to the south. Most courses looped around Witch Craig, in the southern part of the map, before heading north, bypassing the densest forest, for a few more controls before the finish close to Assembly. The terrain was varied, including young deciduous woodland, rough open with good views, conifer plantation, mature deciduous woods, and marshes, with plenty of paths and tracks. It was quite wet and muddy underfoot, with soft going in much of the area. The weather was milder than the previous few days and it was changeable, mostly dry at first with some sun, but there were showers later on.

ESOC members in the top half of the results for their class were:
W Open (11 competitors) – Katrina McLeod 4th
M Supervet (26) – Keith Brown 10th
W Supervet (24) – Helena Nolan 8th, Katherine Kirk 12th
M Ultravet (24) – Crawford Lindsay 10th
W Ultravet (11) – Janice Nisbet 3rd , Sally Lindsay 4th
M Hypervet (6) – Ian Pyrah 2nd
W Hypervet (6) – Eleanor Pyrah 2nd
M14 (6) – Calum Robertson 2nd

The full results are in the FVO results archive, and Routegadget is here.

This event was the third in the 2023 Scottish Inter-Club Championships. After this event, ESOC was lying 2nd in the Large Clubs division, and 3rd in Junior Large Clubs. For further details and the league tables after three events, see this news item on the Scottish Orienteering website.
