SOL 1, 2020Darnaway, 16 February

The first event of the 2020 Scottish Orienteering League was organised by Moravian Orienteers, as part of their “Winter Warmer” weekend, and took place in lovely sunny weather, despite Storm Dennis raging elsewhere.

Darnaway Forest lies SW of Forres, in Moray. The event centre was in the old walled garden of Darnaway Estate, with a 1 mile walk from the parking field. There were 2 starts, both just outside the walled garden, and the terrain at first was beautiful open beech forest on undulating moraine. Longer courses criss-crossed the area, with a variety of forest, some coniferous with brashings, and some deciduous, as well as some rough felled areas. A few courses had fantastic views from a path high above the River Findhorn, and all ran through the delightful open beech trees again before finishing in the centre of the walled garden.
Despite the appalling weather in many other places, it was sunny throughout the event, and although it was quite windy, most found conditions fairly mild for the time of year.

ESOC members in the top half of the results for their course were:
Blue (51 competitors) – Rachel Brown 6th
Short Blue (34) – Crawford Lindsay 8th
Green (51) – Alison Cunningham 7th=, Alastair Lessells 21st, Roger Scrutton 26th
