SOL 3 – 2014Dunrod Hill, 27 April

Plenty of ESOC members headed west for the third event in this year’s Scottish Orienteering League, to be rewarded by a fine day and glorious views.

Dunrod Hill is close to Greenock, west of Glasgow. It’s a large area of open moorland, with tussocky grass and heather on many small hills and a lot of marshes, which were very wet. The weather started off cloudy, then became sunny and warm – as promised, there were panoramic views over the Clyde estuary. The good visibility resulted in some fast runs.
Registration and download were at the Greenock Cut Visitor Centre, where there was a café and interesting exhibition about the Greenock Cut (a 19th Century canal taking water to Greenock, both for drinking and to power mills). Many enjoyed cakes from the ScotJOS stall.

ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
Brown (25 competitors) – Chris Lewis 10th
Blue (43) – Crawford Lindsay 19th
Short Blue (33) – Tyler Morrison 1st, John McLaren 12th, Roger Scrutton 15th
Green (41) – Maggie Scrugham 13th, Janice Nisbet 16th, Margaret Dalgleish 17th, Bill Gauld 20th
Short Green (25) – Anne Stevenson 1st, Fiona Findlay 6th, Janet Clark 7th, Jim Clark 12th
Light Green (21) – Kerry Wood 11th
