SOL 3, 2016Affric North, 8 May
There was a good turnout from ESOC for Inverness Orienteering Club’s event (the third event of the 2016 Scottish Orienteering League), in the challenging terrain of Glen Affric.
Many had been to the area before - Affric North was the venue for Day 6 of the 2016 Scottish 6 Days, and the World Orienteering Championships Long event. Sadly there is felling planned soon, so there’s unlikely to be orienteering here again for the foreseeable future. It’s a huge area of very technical terrain, including semi-open natural pine forest, coniferous plantation and exposed hilltops, with very few man-made features. There was a long walk to the start, and the courses were tough, with many retirals. The weather was dull and misty, giving an added challenge of very restricted visibility on the open high ground visited by the longer courses, but there was hardly any wind, so it wasn’t as cold as in the previous few days. It was very damp underfoot.
ESOC members in the top half of the results for their course were:
Brown (23 competitors) – Rona Lindsay 11th
Blue (46) – Mike Stewart 12th, Keith Brown 18th, Crawford Lindsay 22nd
Green (57) – Janice Nisbet 10th, Sally Lindsay 15th, Ian Pyrah 19th, Margaret Dalgleish 20th=
Short Green (28) – Eleanor Pyrah 14th
Light Green (25) – Rachel Brown 12th
White (18) – Megan Brown 3rd
