SOL 3, 2018Dunachtonmore, 23 September
There was a fair turnout from ESOC, with two course winners, for the third event in the 2018 Scottish Orienteering League, which was organised by BASOC.
Dunachtonmore is next door to the Highland Wildlife Park, near Kincraig. The terrain is open moorland, runnable woods, and open fields near the finish. The moorland includes heather and bog, with juniper and bracken, and the woods are mainly birch, with intricate contours in places. The longest courses led over a hill in the west of the area, where there are some large crags.
The weather was mixed, with sunshine and showers.
Added attractions at the event included mazes (designed for both beginners and experienced orienteers), the CompassPoint stall, and a wide variety of refreshments: pizza, barista coffee, other hot drinks, and of course the Scottish Junior Orienteering Squad cake stall.
ESOC members in the top half of the results for their course were:
Short Brown (31 competitors) – Peter O’Hara 16th
Blue (68) – Keith Brown 18th, Ben Brown 34th
Short Blue (38) – Roger Garnett 13th
Green (58) – Rachel Brown 5th, Alastair Lessells 17th, Roger Scrutton 23rd
